Charles Aznavour
chanson
Aznavour, 1964, looking back at himself at twenty and finding mostly wasted time. He was forty when he wrote it, which is young to be writing a song about squandering your life, and part of why it lands is that the arrangement stays brisk and light while the words do not.
He is often called the French Sinatra. The comparison undersells the writing: Aznavour wrote his own material, more than a thousand songs of it.
