A Vava Inouva
Idir
kabylefolk
Idir's 1976 debut single and the song that carried Kabyle Berber music out of Algeria and onto radio across Europe. Built on a lullaby structure his mother's generation would have recognised, with a call-and-response between a father and daughter at the door.
It became an anthem for Berber cultural identity at a time when Algeria was pushing hard toward Arabisation, which is part of why a gentle acoustic song carries the weight it does.
