Inception

Christopher Nolan · 2010

sci-fiheist

A crew of specialists breaks into people's dreams to steal ideas, and takes one last job that requires the opposite — planting one. The structure is a heist film, which is what makes the physics teachable: every rule gets explained during the planning so the last hour can run four timelines at once without stopping to catch you up.

Nolan built as much of it as possible for real. The rotating hallway fight is a practical set on a giant centrifuge, not an effect, and it looks it — the actor is genuinely being thrown around a spinning corridor.

The ending is the most argued-about shot of its decade, and the argument slightly misses the point: the film cuts before the top falls because by then the character has stopped caring, and the audience is the only one left checking.
