The Picture of Dorian Gray
Oscar Wilde
fictiongothic
Wilde's only novel, and the one that was used against him at trial. A portrait ages and corrupts while its subject does not, which lets Wilde write about consequence without ever staging it.
The magazine version was censored by its own editor before publication; Wilde then added six chapters and a preface for the book, and the preface is the best short statement of his position on art there is.
