José Mauro de Vasconcelos
fictioncoming-of-age
A five-year-old in a poor Rio suburb, too clever for his own good, is beaten at home and finds his only real conversation in an orange tree and, eventually, in a Portuguese man with a car.
Vasconcelos said it was largely autobiographical and wrote it in twelve days. It is a children's book in the sense that its narrator is a child, and it is much harder than that makes it sound.
