Waris Dirie

memoir

Waris Dirie's account of running from a forced marriage in Somalia at thirteen, crossing the desert alone, working as a maid in London, and being photographed into a modelling career by accident.

She published it in 1998 and used it to speak publicly about female genital mutilation at a point when almost nobody would, which is what the book is remembered for rather than the fashion years.
