Ölüm Məhbusunun Son Günü

Victor Hugo

novellafrench-literature

Hugo wrote it in 1829 as an argument against the guillotine: the diary of a condemned man in his final hours, with his crime deliberately never stated so the reader cannot decide he deserves it.

It is a piece of campaigning as much as a novel, and it worked slowly — Hugo returned to capital punishment for the rest of his life. France did not abolish the death penalty until 1981.
