The last and longest story in Dubliners, set at a Christmas party in Dublin. Almost all of it is small talk — until the final pages, when a song on the stairs opens something in Gretta that her husband had no idea was there.

The closing paragraph, with snow falling across all of Ireland, is one of the most admired endings in English prose. Huston filmed it as his final picture, dying weeks after finishing.
