John Steinbeck
novellaamerican-literature
A pearl diver finds a stone large enough to change his family's life, and it destroys them. Steinbeck wrote it as a parable and it behaves like one: no wasted detail, characters close to types, an ending you can see coming and cannot stop.
He based it on a Mexican folk tale he heard while collecting marine specimens in the Gulf of California.
