Franz Kafka

novellamodernism

Gregor Samsa wakes as an insect and the story spends almost none of its length on how or why. What it is actually about is the family — their disgust, their slow adjustment, and the relief they feel at the end, which is the coldest thing in it.

Kafka read the opening aloud to friends and reportedly laughed while doing it. He also insisted the creature never be drawn on the cover, which is why the vagueness of the word he used is deliberate rather than a translation problem.
